What this calculator does
Changing the fabric is the easiest way to change the size of a cross-stitch design, and stitchers do it all the time: a pattern written for 14-count Aida might suit 28-count linen, or a design might need to shrink to fit a hoop you already own. This converter shows the finished size and the fabric to cut for one design on every common count in a single list, so you can compare without redoing the math.
How to use it
- Enter the stitch count from the chart.
- Set a margin for framing, usually 3 inches.
- Read down the list and pick the fabric that gives the size you want.
The math
size in inches = stitches ÷ (count ÷ threads per stitch)
Quick reference: inches per number of stitches
| Fabric | 50 sts | 100 sts | 150 sts | 200 sts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 4.5″ | 9.1″ | 13.6″ | 18.2″ |
| 14-count Aida | 3.6″ | 7.1″ | 10.7″ | 14.3″ |
| 16-count Aida | 3.1″ | 6.3″ | 9.4″ | 12.5″ |
| 18-count Aida | 2.8″ | 5.6″ | 8.3″ | 11.1″ |
| 25-count evenweave, over 2 | 4.0″ | 8.0″ | 12.0″ | 16.0″ |
| 28-count evenweave, over 2 | 3.6″ | 7.1″ | 10.7″ | 14.3″ |
| 32-count linen, over 2 | 3.1″ | 6.3″ | 9.4″ | 12.5″ |
| 36-count linen, over 2 | 2.8″ | 5.6″ | 8.3″ | 11.1″ |
Same size, different feel. Pairs that stitch to the same size: 14-count Aida and 28-count over two; 16-count Aida and 32-count over two; 18-count Aida and 36-count over two.
Questions people ask
Is 28-count evenweave the same as 14-count Aida?
When stitched over two threads, yes: both give 14 stitches per inch, so a design comes out the same size. The look differs. Evenweave has a smoother, softer surface.
How do I make a design bigger or smaller?
Change the fabric count. A lower count makes it bigger, a higher count smaller. You can also stitch Aida over two blocks to double the size.
Do I need different floss for different counts?
Usually 2 strands of six-strand floss on 14 to 16-count Aida and 28 to 32-count over two, 3 strands on 11-count, and 1 to 2 on 18-count. Test a few stitches to see what covers well.
